Episode 28: The Circumcision Party
Tuesday Jun 02, 2020
Tuesday Jun 02, 2020
This week on Talk Sex With Dick, NYC Sex Therapist Dr. Richard Mills hears the story of a man who had a circumcision party at the age of 13.
Three days before the 9/11 attacks, Hakki immigrated from Turkey to the United States, in his pursuit of living the American dream.
As he sat next to me, I listened to his story of living in Turkey, the common practices of circumcision, and its symbolic meaning of becoming a man.
Conflicted with the decision to become circumcised, Hakki speaks to his experience of being introduced to the idea of circumcision by his parents at the age of six. Ultimately, he believed that this would provide him a rite of passage into manhood but feared what it would mean to be circumcised.
In detail, he describes how at the age of six he was completely mortified with the idea of undergoing circumcision, as he feared his doctor would cut his penis in half – wondering how it would function. As we dove deeper into his own experiences, Hakki wondered what was wrong with his penis and why he needed to be circumcised.
At the age of six he was confronted by the doctor with a scalpel and how he escaped from through a bathroom window, where he is was latter chased down by his father’s driver who found him hiding in a tree.
At the age of eleven everything changed as he witnessed his cousin being circumcised, which was a turning point for him – changing his mind and decision to get circumcised a month after his thirteenth birthday.
As the date approached, he began preparing himself for the procedure. He described the celebration as being “huge” (comparing it to a wedding), where formal invitations were sent out to hundreds of friends and relatives, who were invited to attend the circumcision party.
Hundreds of people attended his circumcision party, where there were clowns, music, food and alcohol. There, he was showered by gifts from loved ones (i.e., money and gold).
At the party he is “dressed like a king” in all white and gold, where he was greeted with a white horse that ushered him to the doctor’s office that was followed by a caravan of drums, honking, and his father who would attend the circumcision.
He tells how he was greeted at the doctor’s office by the physician who would perform the surgery, where his father would be present to witness the act.
Entering the office a boy, he left feeling like a man.
Describing the recovery process, he explains how it was “painful” – experiencing pain when urinating or achieving an erection.
He says that while it was painful, being circumcised was significant and meaningful in his journey of becoming a man.

Thursday May 21, 2020
Thursday May 21, 2020
This week on Talk Sex With Dick, Sex Therapist Dr. Richard Mills talks about sexual desire, sex, a good book, dating after divorce, adult circumcision, and avoiding being catfished.
Before diving into questions, I talk about returning to NYC from Los Angeles, how my cat Al is in need of dental surgery to have his teeth removed.
I talk about meeting Pamela Gay in 2017 at a restaurant in NYC, who reconnected with me and sent a copy of her page turning memoir, I’m So Glad You’re Here – a story of overcoming the trauma and journey of healing with her father, who struggled with severe mental illness.
I discuss Fiona Apple’s recent album release of Fetch the Bolt Cutters, and the new jaw dropping Netflix releases of Hollywood and Caliphate.
This weekend I’m hosting a social distancing virtual movie night. Each week my friends select a series of choices. Some of my favorites include: Beaches, Dallas Buyers Club, Steel Magnolias, To Wong Foo Thank You for Everything, and Boys Don’t Cry.
In world news, Benjamin Fredell gave up his dream of being a pro hockey player because he decided to come out as gay, Matt Belanger (a news anchor on 5 Eyewitness News in Minneapolis, Minnesota) suffered major injury in a gay hate crime, while Amazon Prime is questioned for censoring a gay sex scene in God’s Own Country.
Below provides a series of questions that I answer, from listeners who’ve written in…
The first listener, from the Bronx is feeling horny, but because of the pandemic his sexual appetite goes on unsatisfied. When he attempts to initiate inviting men over to his home for an afternoon romp, he is turned down. He wonders if there is anything he can do or say to persuade men to come over.
The next listener, from Los Angeles recently ended a marriage of 15 years, and wonders what the next move is to get back into the game -- dating after divorce. He feels dating in today’s world is complicated, and wonders if he still has what it takes to get the ball rolling.
The next listener, from Manhattan provides his reaction to Episode 25: Adult Circumcision – and wonders if he should consider circumcision as an option. He feels frustrated and overwhelmed in his dating life, as while the women he dates say they don’t care that he’s uncut, however, their reaction speaks louder than words.
Finally, a listener from Charlotte has been talking with a guy on Grindr but concerned as the man he’s been talking to wants to meet in real life, however, he hasn’t been completely forthcoming – catfishing. The pictures he’s sent are from a time when he was thinner, in better shape, and about five years younger. He’s concerned that if and when they meet for a social distancing date that he will experience rejection.

Episode 26. Adult Circumcision
Friday May 15, 2020
Friday May 15, 2020
This week on Talk Sex With Dick, Dr. Richard Mills hears a story of a man who shares his experiences with masturbation, sexual pain and undergoing adult circumcision.
_____________
While in Los Angeles, I interviewed a man named Peter. He was open to share with the world his experiences and decision to undergo adult circumcision, at 21 years of age.
Awaked to the age of puberty he began to realize there was something wrong when he would experience painful erections – explaining how his foreskin was fused to the head of his penis,
Growing up in an Armenian household he found it extremely difficult, because he couldn’t have conversations about his body, and didn’t have the language or word for “foreskin” to communicate the discomfort he was experiencing – to his parents.
From this account, he explains how masturbation and sex in particular was extremely painful. In detail he described the difficulties of having intercourse – “excruciating painful” and describing how the physical sensation and motion felt like his foreskin was ripping off his penis whenever he’d masturbate or have sex.
After nearly a decade of dealing with this unbearable pain, he decided to undergo surgery to have his foreskin removed – adult circumcision.
In detail, he describes preparing for the surgery and the recovery process.
While the procedure of circumcision appeared easy, the recovery process was “extremely painful.” Every time he achieved an erection in his sleep, he would wake up wondering if the stitches had come undone, which occurred at times and he suffered penial bleeding.
Peter explained how even though he went through adult circumcision, he would never have his future children circumcised – after attending a social distance campfire gathering, where a doctor explained the inhumane process that infant boys are subjected to.
The cost of circumcision outweighs the benefits, when examining his own experiences. Peter is clear to clarify that while he experienced his own challenges related to being uncircumcised, his experiences are not universal to everyone who is intact.
One thing he did mention is that after the surgery, he noticed a decreased sensitivity in his penis.
The conclusion he and I reached was this – it is the responsibility of parents to educate their children about the body. In his own life he wonders if the conversations were had, might he not have experienced this complication in life.

Episode 25: The Unexpected Pregnancy
Friday May 01, 2020
Friday May 01, 2020
This week on Talk Sex With Dick, NYC Sex Therapist Dr. Richard Mills talks about his time in LA, a man who inquiries about sex with his wife after 44 years of marriage, and answers questions about feeling frustrated, divorce, Grindr, credit card debt, and dealing with an unexpected pregnancy.
After taken a last minute trip to Los Angeles, Richard discusses how he’s come to understand the pandemic as a state of mind. Hunkering down in Glendale, he finds himself at peace as he ventures to take in the Hollywood skyline while mentally preparing for his return to New York City and beginning the summer, and getting sucked into Leah Remini’s A&E television series Scientology & The Aftermath he finds himself flabbergasted by the light she shines on the abusive practices of the Church of Scientology.
He tells the story of a phone call he received earlier in the week from one man in Michigan who inquired if it was safe to have sex with his wife of 40+ years, during the pandemic.
He goes on to answer a series of questions from listers who wrote in.
The first question comes from a listener in Manhattan who describes their frustrations with the pandemic. They feel discouraged in their relationship and describe feeling disconnected and wonder if things will change when the pandemic is over.
Another man from Ohio wrote in to express his feelings of devastation as he recently discovered his partner was sending naked pictures to other men on Grindr. From his response, it’s clear he is overwhelmed and wonders if he can move past this violation of trust. He’s saddened by his partners actions, that has caused him to wonder if his partner has stepped out. The love he once felt feels far away, and deep down wonders what they should do next.
The next listener from Washington describes their partner is in over their head $50,000 in credit card debt after receiving a call from a debt collector. They are contemplating divorce, but unsure what steps to take next.
Finally, the last listener from Minnesota recently found out she is pregnant after a one night stand and has decided not to have an abortion but is worried about what her family and church community will think once they find out.
